Family Workbee Weekend

May 11-13, 2018

Cost: FREE!!

All adults and families are welcome to share in the fun and fellowship through work projects, activities, devotions, and free time. Food, lodging, and child-care are all provided by the camp at no charge in exchange for your service. Help us get the camp ready for the busy summer ahead. All we ask is that you give 10 hours of service in exchange for a wonderful and fulfilling weekend away in the midst of God’s creation!

The weekend will feature…

  • Morning Devotions, Evening Singing and Worship
  • Special Meals
  • Work projects and recreation for children and youth
  • Fellowship and service with fellow Christians!

Children aged 6-12: Children in this age range will form a work group(s) which will be led by one of our college-aged Camp Lakeview summer counselors. During the ten hours of work time, the children will work approximately half the time and fill the other half with recreational activities such as games, crafts, hikes, etc. The work projects they complete will be appropriate for their age and abilities.

Children aged 5 and under: We will provide day-care during the work times for children 5 and under. The care will be provided by volunteer weekend participants (moms or older youth) or by the Camp Lakeview staff. The day-care will include both indoor and outdoor activities.

Possible projects include:

  • Cut/Split firewood
  • Painting / Staining
  • General Cleaning
  • Washing Windows
  • Trail Maintenance
  • Raking
  • Fold T-Shirts
  • Hanging Cabin Curtains
  • Splitting/Stacking Firewood
  • Install Swimming Dock
  • (other tasks may “support” the work of others such as babysitting or helping in the kitchen.)

Families will either be housed in cabins (one family per cabin) or in the retreat complex (one room per family). Housing requests will be considered, but preference will be given to families with small children.

Arrival and Departure

Check-in is Friday evening from 6:30-7:30 p.m. eastern time. We will gather at 7:30 for introductions and a review of the weekend’s schedule and list of work projects. The program ends after lunch on Sunday (approx. 1:00 p.m.), but you are welcome to remain at camp on Sunday afternoon to enjoy the facility.

Work Schedules

Work will be accomplished during three periods. Saturday morning from 8:30-11:45, Saturday afternoon from 1-4:30, and Sunday morning from 8:30-11:45. Children (under 13) will not work this long. They will be assigned to a work team which will be led by one of our summer staff and will work for about half of each period. The other half will be spent in organized recreation. Small children (5 and under) will not work at all – child care will be provided.

Types of Projects

The object of the weekend is to help get the camp in shape for summer camp. There will be a whole range of projects, including light construction, cleaning, painting, raking, wood-splitting, folding T-shirts, and much more! We will do our best to match your skills with a project which needs completing.

We will also depend on a few of our weekend participants to provide daycare and cooking for the group.

Although the camp has a lot of tools, we never seem to have enough for a weekend like this. Therefore, if you could bring some from home, it would be very helpful. You may want to call the camp in advance to find out what tools would be most needed. Please label all of your tools to make sure you get them back after the weekend.

Participants who possess special skills which may be helpful (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, sewing,) should let the camp know in advance so that your talents may be put to the best use.

Non-Work Activities

We will have a campfire devotion on Friday evening and a worship service on Saturday evening. Recreational activities (games, crafts, hiking, swimming) will be available for children during half of each work period. These activities will be led by the camp staff.

Participants are welcome to relax and enjoy the camp facilities and the company of their fellow servants both evenings after worship and during the late afternoon on Saturday. Families are also welcome to remain at camp Sunday afternoon to enjoy the facilities.

Registration deadline is May 1st.  Acceptance will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.  The maximum enrollment is 75 people.
